Buy and Sell neogeo stuff
Kazuya_UK has set up a funky new section over at his site where you can flog or buy Neo Geo gear.
Straight from the horses mouth, heres what he says..

I have set up a new section on the site purely as an experiment. Basically you can now list any Neo Geo and SNK related items up on the site that you would like to sell (providing they are LEGAL!), so that people can contact you about buying it

Sounds cool if your into that sort of thing. Go check it out.

RetroRant #2
RabidFrog has sent me word that TE's new editorial, (it's now a weekly feature called "RetroRant") will be out every Friday. This weeks is called "Emu Faking" and is availible via here!
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - we can't print what they say about fakery - although it does seem to be an ever present and disturbing scourge that threatens to overshadow the enjoyment of our favourite pastime.

KIAME released... under a new name
KIAME, that Killer Instinct Arcade Machine Emulator has been released to the public under a new name. U64emu is its name, and I must say I am very dissapointed with this public release.

The betas were much better, so why this was released to the public is anyones guess. Seeing as its the only release your gonna get for the time being, you may as well check it out, even if its to wonder why it was released in such a state when the unreleased betas have been far superior.

MAMED! Update
MAMED!, the amazing MAME/MESS emulator for Digital Cameras! It's a whole year old today! Whoa! Seems like only yesterday when the videos proving it was a reality were released... Here's the snip!

This site is One Year Old Today! Over 177,000 hits, almost 500 a day on average. The response has been more than I ever imagined. Thanks for all the supportive e-mails and comments. I still remember when this site went live and how many people didn't believe it was really possible to run MAME on a camera.

One new thing...a new version of DOOMD for the new HP & PENTAX coldfire based cameras is available. Mikael Kalms was kind enough to write coldfire assembly language versions of the fixed point math used in Doom and send them to me. I have installed them and compiled them for the coldfire. Moving around is now much more fluid and smooth on this camera, I haven't precisely measured the performance improvement but it is definitely noticeable.

Total Emulation Re-Opens
Good oul Rabsy, he's decided to really get TE back up and runnin! Good luck. They've moved to http://www.totalemulation.org, something that should have been done a long time ago. Craig Vaughan has written an article concerning the industry's distain for emulation.
Someone, somewhere has decided that ‘nostalgia’ (through retrogaming) is a corrupting influence on today’s gaming industry, and the industry has managed to convince itself that harking back to the past is going to have a detrimental effect on the future of our favourite hobby. Of the major U.K publishers, only Hasbro, Atari – and to a lesser extent – Activision have fully realised the massive potential of retrogaming, whether it be through re-releasing un-enhanced classics, or giving old games a Millennium remix.

MIMIC Update
MIMIC a generic hardware emulator was updated today (and yesterday, 'cept I missed it). Here's what's up:
I started checking out DJGPP and managed to get the FIRE code compiled without too many dramas. Problem is it almost made me sick (literaly) because it is too damn quick :) The EXE is quite large for such a simple program, but what a trade-off !!! And this is WITHOUT any of the optimisation options turned on !!!

Needless to say that all development of Mimic is now completly on hold while I convert the rest of the code. Expect a BIG performance boost.

BTW: I noticed that Mimic 1.04 was given an audio rating of 5.5/10 at a certain emu news site. Not bad for an emu without any sound at all. :)

Added SMS line interrupts. I had this in there before but removed it, and now rewrote it. Lots more SMS stuff working now. Check the SMS Compatibility page for more details. Has anybody else tried other SMS carts? If so, send me an email to say how you went.

RealSpectrum beta 8 is out
The latest version of RealSpectrum is out now. Here's whats new:

  • Real-tape support: reliable loading and saving of real Spectrum tapes directly through your soundcard. To enable it, select "Physical-Device" in the tape fileselectors. Please read the new dedicated sections in the Tapes chapter.
  • Covox, Stereo Covox, Soundrive and Music Machine emulation: added a digital channel for 4 x 8-bit stereo sound DACs with linear interpolation, providing high quality music and effects. When enabled (ALT-F12), the digital sound devices replace the beeper channel (so they are subject to the "Device Balance" setting in the main sound panel of F12).
  • Empty disk images creation: with ALT-F6 you can create empty IMG, MGT, TRD, DSK and MDR files. Note: DSK disks and MDR cartridges are blank and must be formatted.
  • Parallel port emulation for DISCiPLE, +D, +2A, +3 and Scorpion. Data can be sent to LPT1, LPT2 or a disk file. See the Communication Ports menu (CTRL-F3).
  • Ability to change ROMs also for the various peripherals in F3 (DISCiPLE, +D, TRDOS, IF-1, Multiface).
  • Improved Scorpion emulation: exact multicolor timings, enabled Shadow Monitor (NMI) and fix for "128 TRDOS". Coming next: turbo speed emulation.
  • Better real disk support: improved BIOS compatibility; now it works with TRDOS disks too.
  • Joystick emulation also via PC cursor keys (select "Cursor Keys" as stick in ALT-F3).
  • Updated help pages (F1).
  • Added switch "AY-48K:" in the INI file to enable/disable the AY soundchip for the 16K and 48K Spectrum models; the available settings are: 0=OFF (original 48K), 1=AY38912 and 2=YM2149; the default is 1 (AY enabled).
  • Support for 256K .Z80 snapshots in Scorpion mode (both reading and writing). Improved Z80/SNA snapshot handling with +2A/+3 and Scorpion models.
  • Many bugfixes (+2A/+3 timings, custom ROMs loading, DemoMode, .AY player, Z80 core, FlashLoading, etc).

So, You Want The Truth?
You can't handle the truth! That is the truth about Super Mario Bros. 2.

The Question

"Why does Super Mario Bros. 2 look SO different from Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3?"

The Truth

The game that we Americans have come to embrace as Super Mario Bros. 2 is actually an edited version of a Japanese game entitled "Doki Doki Panic." Nintendo, fearing that the true Super Mario Bros. 2 would be too difficult for American players, rushed to find an adequate substitute for the "veteran's" sequel to their monster hit.

As you can see, this game is featured over at EmuFarm. Here you will find out loads of lovely bits of information about this game.

Thanks to Tek7 for the mail.

The wait is over.. ePSXe has finally been released to the public, and boy is it good. Its free and plays some games very nicely indeed with extra enhancements such as Bilinear Filtering and other funky visual stuff, so long as you have the right plugins.

Having tried 3 games, 2 worked perfectly which aint bad odds IMO. Tekken 3 and Thrill Kill were great in high-res, but unfortunately Tony Hawks didnt make the 3rd hurdle.

Head on over to the Official Site and leech it now. And before you start, dont even think about pestering me for the PSX BIOS - I wont give you it.

It Was Just A Matter Of Time...
... until Dave released a new version of Final Burn supporting Galaxy Force II. Here's the crack:

v0.040
+ Galaxy Force II!

* What was up with the GF palette? Turn out there's a palette reference into
an EXTRA palette (a possible 32768 colors), which in turn goes into the normal
main palette (16384 colors), which in turn goes into the GLOBAL palette (4 million colors).
The word 'nightmare' comes to mind, but it's sorted now!
Power Drift almost totally ignores this 'feature' (apart from the spinning wheels),
which is why that worked okay.

+ Added a new option for Auto-Centering Keyboard!
To use, first you must load up the game you wish to play,
bring up the menu panel if it isn't already visible (press Escape),
click Input, and then click Keyboard (Auto-Centering).

It works really well with Galaxy Force II, Power Drift (in-game anyway!),
ThunderBlade and Out Run.
For After Burner however, it's much easier to aim if you select the normal Keyboard option.

* In fact, Keyboard with Auto-Centering works so well that I have also made it the default.
People who want to use a joystick should now configure games by clicking
Input and then Joystick 1 (only need to be done once per game).

* Note, now F = Burners, G = Brakes (or you can use A and Z if you are using
Joystick 1 2-button or Keyboard.)

- The Galaxy Force Hardware uses a powerful tilt/rotate effect, which isn't emulated yet.
- Lot's of glitches - don't e-mail, I know about them!
- Galaxy Force II uses a LOT of sprites in the tunnel sections (each wall has about 50-100
sprites). It slows down my computer, so you probably do need a P3 this time
(for the tunnel sections anyway). A shame.

SNES9x 1.32a is a SNES emulator for windows with multi-player support (via internet). This new version is for people that have OpenGL, if you dont, dont bother downloading this version. Heres a list of whats new:

Gollum Interviewed
Gollum, the author of Boycott & NeoPocott, has been interviewed by PnP & Rico. Here's a snippet:

Hum, why "cott" ?
cott ? cot ? cot ? (French sound of chicken) lol ;-)

lol
actually I was looking for a funny name for a Gameboy emu. Boycott was nice for both french and english speaking. Later Mascott like Mascotte (a small animal to give an image or a representation of a club or association) in french was also good for a Master System emu

After that, I use "cott" for all emus I do (my personal touch) Biscotte (French joke) is good but I don't have emu for this name ;-)

The interview is very interesting and can be viewed in French or English HERE! or HERE!.
