You cant beat a bit of the old Ultra Violence, so what better place to start than the grandaddy - Midway's Mortal Kombat
I first saw this game in the local arcade, and didnt reckon much to it. There was no gore, no blood, nothing. Just a regular 1-on-1 fighter in my oppinion. Then I saw Ice T play it on the TV over here, and I saw blood which made me think "Whoa, blood!"
So off I went to the local arcade and had another look, and yet again there was no blood or gore. So I never touched the damned thing again... until a friend told me about it in his local shop, complete with gore. I went round and had a look, and sure enough, there was gore alright - my friend had a go and what followed made me sit up and pay attention - he ripped the other guys head right off !
Thats right, I witnessed the first ever gruesome Fatality in a game, and it was a corker. From then on, this became my main game. Streetfighter 2 said bye bye, and Mortal Kombat said Hello. The only problem was the gore-less version at the local arcade, which also had no speech I found out. I complained to the electrician there next time he came round, who explained to me it was a bootleg and had no speech or gore. Well duh!
I dont know how it happened though, but a week later the very same game had the gore back in all its glory, and thats where my obsession with MK began.
The game is much like Streetfighter 2, only it uses digitised characters so instead of cartoony guys, you had life like replicas that looked perfect. What did make it different from SF2, is the separate Block button which I prefer to pulling back on the joystick. But what really makes it stand out, is the mentioned gore factor - it is truly Over The Top, and blood will be splashing everywhere when you start to figure out the Fatality moves
Curently playable in MAME with sound, although requires a meaty machine in the region of a PII 366 or above to play with the sound enabled. Youve probably already seen the game, but try it out anyway. Its mint.
